Open Language English is a comprehensive, all-in-one app that teaches English to learners of all levels. It’s available for iPhone and Android, and costs $30 per month. But don’t let the hefty pricetag deter you: it’s an excellent tool for those who are serious about improving their English.
The app emphasizes communication in its instruction style: rather than relying on rote memorization and contextually disembodied lists of vocabulary, Open Language English teaches language in the way it’s actually used in the real world. As such, each lesson is based on real dialogues, and emphasizes common, high-frequency language.
All lessons are assigned a level, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native fluency); thus, beginners and experts alike have plenty of material to choose from. Lessons are quick, simple, and center around a single theme (e.g., greetings, ordering food, etc.). Further, the clean, uncluttered interface is a breeze to navigate.
Lessons include reading, writing, vocabulary, listening, and even speaking exercises--an “accuracy” feature allows users to record themselves, and get feedback from voice recognition software. These exercises are highly interactive and convenient: users select exercise topics that interest them the most, and can create customizable decks of vocabulary flash cards with the words that are most relevant to their needs.
People who are learning English just for fun need not apply: Open Language English is for serious learners who want a structured, thorough learning experience. Ultimately, with its easy-to-use interface, emphasis on real-world communication, and ample lesson database, Open Language English is worth its price.
