A Mixed Approach to Learning French
Listen & Learn: Good morning, Nick! It’s great to have you with us today to share your experience! Could you begin by telling us a little about you and the language you chose to learn and why?
Nick Alcock: Because I spent a fair bit of time in France as a child falling in love with the language and the country, I decided it would be good if I could add French as my third language after English and Welsh.
Listen & Learn: Excellent decision! And why did you choose to learn with Listen & Learn?
Nick Alcock: I had been trying to learn through audiobooks and apps for some time. However, I came to the conclusion that these are no substitution for an opportunity to practice with a native speaker. I was absolutely right. Those resources are great tools in isolation however, and are 20 times more effective when supplemented with one-to-one lessons.
Listen & Learn: What is your favorite thing about studying with Listen & Learn?
Nick Alcock: My teacher. He is very friendly and patient. I really can’t speak highly enough of Christophe.
Listen & Learn: He sounds like an awesome teacher! What was the most helpful aspect of your course with him?
Nick Alcock; It was the opportunity to practice conversation with a native speaker, and also to have the opportunity to ask any questions I couldn’t ask a textbook.
Listen & Learn: That definitely helps a lot. What has been your most rewarding outcome from this experience?
Nick Alcock: Going from not being able to create basic sentences to being able to hold conversations. It’s been great to notice the progress month by month.
Listen & Learn: So, do you think that your language ability has benefited from your lessons? Have you had an opportunity to use your new skills in the real world?
Nick Alcock: Yes, I believe over the course of the last 6 months my French has improved significantly. It will definitely be useful for future opportunities, should I look to work with a French business or move to France or any other French-speaking country.
Listen & Learn: Definitely! Why do you think other students should enroll in a language course with Listen & Learn?
Nick Alcock: If you’re serious about learning a language, I recommend supplementing usual resources with lessons with Listen & Learn to really embed your learning and have the opportunity to practice some of the more difficult aspects, like pronunciation, listening & speaking. At the end of the day, we learn a language to communicate, and there’s no better way to do this than through dedicated time with a native speaker.
Listen & Learn: Thank you for your time, Nick! Before you go, could you tell us what is your favorite word, phrase, or expression in your new language?
Nick Alcock: Battre le fer pendant qu’il est chaud.
