Arabic Lessons in Houston

Houston prides itself on being one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States. According to the census held in 2014, at least a hundred languages are spoken by the city residents, which comes as no surprise if you take into account that 20% of Houstonians were born outside the US. Among this wide range of languages, we can find Arabic, with more than ten thousand estimated speakers in the city.

Arabic is a Semitic language and it is the official language in more than 20 countries. With more than 315 million native speakers, it’s listed as the fifth most-spoken language in the world. Although it has many dialects worth exploring, learners can begin by studying the most widely spoken variety, Modern Standard Arabic, and enjoy the benefits of holding the key to the Arab World.

Why Study Arabic in Houston?

Learn Arabic for Work and Travel

Learning Arabic will increase your business opportunities like no other language. Despite being in high demand for job positions in the United States in engineering, business, medical, and even government jobs, it is still one of the least chosen languages by college students, who deem it as ‘too difficult.’ As a result, learning Arabic is a great asset to stand out in any kind of job application.

On the other hand, the growing economies of countries like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates attract many Americans who move there every year to take advantage of the vast job offers available for English native speakers. Dubai, for example, has one of the largest construction and real estate industries in the world, as well as ever-expanding opportunities in technology, finance, and tourism. Although speaking Arabic is not strictly necessary there, many locals appreciate it, so it can be a game-changer when it comes to building successful business relationships.

Learn Arabic for Social

Choosing to learn Arabic means opening up to a very different culture. Not only will you learn new words and phrases, but you’ll also get familiar with a new set of traditions, beliefs, and worldviews.

If you are in  Houston and you want to learn more about the Arab culture, you can visit the Arab American Cultural Community Center, a non-profit, non-religious organization where both Arab-Americans and people from other communities can get together to celebrate Arab art, history, and language. The center, located near US Highway 59 South and Beltway 8 in Southwest Houston, was created to promote Arab Culture and Heritage and foster a greater understanding of Arab Culture in Houston.

Those interested in Arab cuisine, on the other hand, might want to try Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine, a great local restaurant where you can try dishes such as shawarmashish kabob, and the best fresh-baked pita in town. You can find them at 912 Westheimer Street and 1737 W 34th Street.

Learn Arabic for Culture

If you want to meet new people while learning a new language, Houston Language Partners is exactly what you need. This open group for language learners of all levels holds one-hour meetings in either cafes or libraries where you can find people who can teach you Arabic in exchange for any other languages you might teach them. Additionally, they hold events where they invite instructors to speak and give tips on how people can more effectively find practice partners and teach and learn from each other.

Where to learn Arabic in and around Houston?

Houston has many renowned universities and colleges where you can study Arabic and other languages. The University of Houston, for example, has a Middle Eastern Studies Program that offers courses on Arabic language and literature, as well as Islamic heritage and the modern landscape of the greater Middle East. Another great way to learn about Arab culture in the area is by listening to a great local radio show called Arab Voices, which airs on KPFT 90.1 FM. This show not only showcases some of the best Arab music, but it will also help you be up to date with the current events in the Arab World and also get to know important members of the local Arab community in Houston.

Although both of these options are pretty good, there’s a better place to learn Arabic in the area and that’s Listen & Learn.
